Former Pediatrician Faces Rape Charges for Allegedly Abusing Young Girls During Exams
A former pediatrician from South Shore Medical Center is facing serious charges of rape and assault after allegedly sexually abusing young girls during their annual physical exams. Dr. Richard A. Kauff is accused of sexually assaulting two former patients, with the allegations dating back over 20 years.
According to court records, the accusations came to light when one of Kauff’s alleged victims posted anonymously in a Facebook group, asking if it was normal for a pediatrician to insert fingers into a patient’s vagina during a checkup. This post prompted another woman to come forward, revealing that she had experienced similar encounters as a child. The two women soon discovered that Kauff was the common denominator in their experiences.
The two women reported the alleged abuse to the Norwell Police Department, providing details of their encounters with Kauff. Both victims stated that the assaults occurred even when their parents were present in the room, accusing Kauff of strategically positioning himself to shield his actions from view.
Upon learning of the sexual assault allegations against him, Kauff became upset and denied understanding how this could be happening, emphasizing his over 40-year career without any previous issues. Despite initially agreeing to speak with the police, Kauff later obtained legal counsel and declined to provide a statement.
Kauff faces four counts of child rape with force and a dozen counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, as per court records. He is scheduled for arraignment in Hingham District Court on November 20.
South Shore Health, which operates South Shore Medical Center, has expressed deep concern over the reported allegations and confirmed that Kauff is no longer affiliated with the practice. They have committed to fully cooperating with the investigation and providing support to all patients, families, and staff affected by these accusations.
It is important to note that these are serious allegations, and Dr. Kauff has not yet had the opportunity to present his defense. The legal process will determine the outcome of these charges, ensuring justice is served for all parties involved.
