Former Lions Coach and Ireland Rugby Legend Syd Millar Passes Away at 89

Former Ireland and British and Irish Lions prop Syd Millar has passed away at the age of 89. Millar, who was born in Ballymena, had an illustrious rugby career, earning 37 caps for Ireland and making nine Test appearances for the Lions. In addition to his achievements on the field, Millar coached the Lions in their undefeated 22-match tour of South Africa in 1974. He also led Ireland from 1973 to 1975. Millar went on to become president of the Irish Rugby Football Union in 1995 and chairman of the International Rugby Board in 2003. The Lions hailed Millar as a legendary figure who had dedicated his life to the sport. Ballymena RFC, the club where Millar began his playing career, expressed their condolences to his family. World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont described Millar as a giant of the game on the world stage and praised his leadership and vision. Millar’s passing is mourned by rugby fans around the world, and his contributions to the sport will not be forgotten.
