Tushar Talukdar, former Commissioner of Kolkata Police, passes away at 85
Tushar Talukdar, the former Commissioner of Kolkata Police, breathed his last this afternoon at a private nursing home. The 85-year-old had been in ill health for some time and was admitted to the hospital on January 7. Talukdar served as the commissioner of police from 1992 to 1996 after joining the Indian Police Service following his academic achievements at Presidency College.
Recognized as a brilliant scholar, Talukdar delved into extensive research on various topics, including the deaths of notable figures. Notably, he conducted a groundbreaking investigation on the demise of Prafulla Chaki, concluding that Chaki was hanged at the Mokama railway station before being beheaded. Talukdar’s findings shed light on the British police’s efforts to quell revolutionary movements by displaying Chaki’s severed head to revolutionaries and issuing a warning about the potential consequences of ongoing involvement.
Truly devoted to his beliefs, Talukdar adorned the walls of his chamber at Lalbazar with photographs of influential figures like Marx and Lenin, exemplifying his admiration for their ideologies. His commitment to intellectual pursuits extended to his interactions with senior journalists, as he would often frequent Statesman House to engage with them.
In a poignant coincidence, Talukdar’s passing occurred on the same day as the demise of renowned vocalist Rashid Khan. Notably, Talukdar was an ardent admirer of Khan’s classical compositions, exemplifying his diverse interests and cultural appreciation.
Tushar Talukdar’s contributions to the field of law enforcement and his scholarly pursuits will be remembered by those who knew him. His exceptional intellect and dedication have left a lasting impact on the Kolkata Police and the community at large.
