Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer believes that young batters Tilak Varma and Yashasvi Jaiswal have the potential to shine in the T20I series against West Indies. Jaffer highlighted the versatility and flexibility that Varma brings to the team, with his ability to bat in multiple positions and even bowl off-spin if required. He also expressed confidence in the attacking approach of in-form opener Jaiswal.
Both Varma and Jaiswal have earned their place in the Indian team due to their performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Jaffer commended Varma’s consistency over the past couple of seasons, while Jaiswal’s explosive batting at the top order makes him a valuable asset for India.
Varma, who plays for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL, made a strong impression in his debut season in 2022, scoring 397 runs in 14 matches at an average of 36.09. He followed it up with another impressive season this year, scoring 343 runs in 11 matches at an average of 42.88. Jaiswal, on the other hand, had a breakout season with the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, amassing 625 runs in 14 matches at an average of 48.08.
Jaiswal’s performance in international cricket has also been commendable. During a two-match Test series against West Indies, he scored 266 runs in three innings, including a brilliant century on his debut. Jaffer expressed hope that Jaiswal would continue his fearless approach and replicate his IPL form in the T20I series.
The Indian T20I squad against West Indies includes young talents like Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, and Surya Kumar Yadav, along with experienced players like Hardik Pandya and Yuzvendra Chahal. With the inclusion of Varma and Jaiswal, the team aims to build a strong batting lineup and maximize their chances of success against West Indies.
India and West Indies are set to play five T20I matches, and the performances of Varma and Jaiswal will be crucial in determining the outcome of the series. Former opener Wasim Jaffer’s backing further adds to their confidence as they look to make their mark at the international level.
