Former England international Trevor Francis has sadly passed away at the age of 69 in Spain. It has been reported that he suffered a heart attack at his home in Marbella.

Francis is remembered as a pivotal figure in English football history. In 1979, he became British football’s first £1 million player when he transferred from Birmingham City to Nottingham Forest. His move proved to be a success, as he played a key role in helping Brian Clough’s side secure back-to-back European Cup titles. To this day, Nottingham Forest remains the only English club to achieve this feat.

Throughout his career, Francis represented England, earning 52 caps between 1977 and 1986. He also featured in the 1982 World Cup, showcasing his talent on an international stage.

Before his move to Nottingham Forest, Francis began his professional career with Birmingham City, where he established himself as a club legend. Over a nine-season spell, he scored an impressive 133 goals in 329 appearances.

Despite the hefty price tag attached to his transfer, Francis was on the move again in 1981, this time to Manchester City. He later ventured abroad to play for Italian clubs Sampdoria and Atalanta. In the latter stages of his playing days, Francis donned the colors of Rangers before concluding his career with stints at QPR and Sheffield Wednesday.

After retiring as a player in 1994, Francis transitioned into management. He took charge of Sheffield Wednesday, leading the team to a third-placed finish in the final season of the old First Division in 1992. He also guided the club to two cup finals in 1993. His managerial career later saw him return to Birmingham City, where he spent five years in charge, achieving notable success including a League Cup final appearance in 2001. Francis last managed Crystal Palace between 2001 and 2003.

Following the news of his passing, football legends expressed their condolences and paid tribute to Francis. Former England teammate Gary Lineker described him as a wonderful footballer and lovely man, while former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton conveyed his devastation and referred to Francis as a wonderful gentleman.

Trevor Francis leaves behind a lasting legacy as a talented player and accomplished manager. His contribution to English football will always be remembered, and he will be sorely missed by fans and the football community alike. May he rest in peace.
