Joseph Vincent Pleads Guilty in the Case of the Assassination of President Moïse
American of Haitian origin, Joseph Vincent, has pleaded guilty in an American court for his involvement in the assassination of Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. Vincent is the fourth suspect to admit his guilt in this case, following Alejandro Rivera Garcia, Rodolphe Jaar, and former Haitian senator Joseph Joël John. Both Jaar and Rivera were sentenced to life in prison, while John is awaiting his sentencing on December 19, 2023.
Vincent, along with 11 other defendants, including former Colombian soldiers and businessmen, is accused of providing funds, weapons, and leading the nighttime attack on President Moïse’s residence. His charges include conspiracy to kill and kidnap a person outside the United States, as well as conspiracy to provide material support and resources.
According to his plea agreement, Vincent could face a maximum sentence of life in prison. In a signed deposition, he confirmed his involvement in providing support and services for the planning and execution of Moïse’s kidnapping and assassination from February 2021 to July 7, 2021.
The filing also revealed that Vincent had advised his co-conspirators on Haitian politics and attended meetings with key Haitian political and community figures in Miami. Vincent further admitted to meeting with co-conspirators, including Colombian mercenaries and Haitian-Americans, in Haiti before the assassination. He acknowledged being a passenger in a car driven by co-conspirator James Solages to President Moïse’s residence.
It is worth noting that Vincent initially proclaimed his innocence in front of Haitian judge Me Clément Noël, stating that he was only a translator for the ex-Colombian soldiers involved.
The guilty pleas from multiple suspects in the assassination of President Moïse mark significant progress in bringing those responsible to justice. As the investigation continues, the international community and the people of Haiti will closely follow the legal proceedings to ensure a fair and thorough resolution to this tragic event.
The collaboration between American and Haitian authorities in pursuing justice for President Moïse’s assassination demonstrates a commitment to upholding the rule of law and holding accountable those involved in such heinous acts. The outcome of Vincent’s sentencing and the ongoing legal process will serve as an important step towards justice and closure for the people of Haiti.
