Former Woolworths boss, Grant O’Brien, has been appointed as the chairman of Tasmania’s inaugural AFL team. O’Brien, a native Tasmanian and former footballer, was unveiled as the head of the 19th AFL club at his childhood football club. The league’s CEO, Gillon McLachlan, praised O’Brien’s football background and business acumen, stating that he was the perfect fit for the new club. O’Brien’s first task will be to appoint the rest of the board members and establish the club’s governance and business plan. The team is expected to enter the national competition in 2028.

O’Brien expressed his excitement about the challenge of preparing a Tasmanian team for entry into the AFL. He stated that the appointment was a starting point for the process ahead. His football knowledge and business expertise make him an ideal leader for the club, according to McLachlan.

The AFL and the Tasmanian government approved O’Brien’s appointment, and he will chair a five-person board consisting of two members selected by each party. O’Brien plans to appoint the rest of the board members by the end of next month. The board will then work on establishing the club’s governance and business plan, as well as deciding on its colors, name, and logo.

O’Brien aims to have all tasks completed by the AFL grand final day on September 30. He mentioned that merchandise for the new team could be available by Christmas. However, it may not feature the colors and name of the final team.

The announcement of O’Brien’s appointment comes as the momentum for the new team grows. The recent State of Origin match in Tasmania attracted 7,000 spectators, reflecting the enthusiasm and support for the team. McLachlan expressed confidence in the team’s success and emphasized the positive impact it would have on the state’s economy.

The prospect of building a new stadium at Macquarie Point remains a contentious issue. However, O’Brien stated that he will focus on leading the club’s establishment and leave the stadium debate to the politicians. The Labor party has maintained its position in support of the team but against the stadium.

Grant O’Brien’s appointment as the chairman of Tasmania’s AFL team marks an important milestone in the establishment of the club. With his football background and business expertise, O’Brien is well-suited to lead the team into the national competition in 2028. The excitement and support for the team continue to grow, despite the ongoing debate surrounding the Macquarie Point stadium. As the club moves forward, O’Brien’s leadership and commitment will be instrumental in shaping the future success of Tasmanian AFL.
