Former Canadian world champion pole vaulter Shawn Barber has passed away at the age of 29. Barber’s agent, Paul Doyle, confirmed his death on Wednesday night but did not disclose the specific cause. Barber had been battling an ongoing illness. The news of his passing has left the athletic community in shock and mourning.

Barber’s teammate, Canadian women’s pole vaulter Alysha Newman, expressed her sadness and disbelief in an emotional Instagram post. She described Barber as her teammate, dear friend, and confidant, stating that it was too soon for him to be taken away. Messages of condolences poured in from athletes and fans alike, reminiscing about the memories Barber had left them with.

Doyle, in an Instagram post from his management page, remembered Barber as a friend who would never be forgotten, emphasizing the great loss that his passing brings. Long jumper Andreas Trajkovski from North Macedonia also expressed his sorrow, calling the news heartbreaking.

Shawn Barber, born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, held dual Canadian-American citizenship and was raised in Toronto. He achieved great success in his athletic career, winning the gold medal at the 2015 world championships in Beijing with a mark of 5.90 meters. This victory marked Canada’s first athletics world title in 12 years and their first-ever pole vault medal at the worlds.

Barber’s accomplishments also included winning the NCAA outdoor title in 2015 and setting the Canadian men’s pole vault record of 6.00 meters in January 2016. However, he faced challenges throughout his career. His father, George Barber, who had coached him, was banned by Athletics Canada due to a 2007 criminal conviction. Shawn Barber himself tested positive for traces of cocaine before the 2016 Rio Olympics but was permitted to compete after it was determined that he unknowingly ingested the substance.

In April 2017, Barber publicly came out as gay in a Facebook post, expressing gratitude for the support he received from his parents and friends. He continued to compete until 2020, leaving behind a lasting impact on the sport and the people he touched.

The athletic community, as well as fans, are devastated by Shawn Barber’s untimely passing. His achievements, charisma, and resilience will be remembered and celebrated. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
