Former Australian spinner Stuart MacGill has been charged with participating in a $330,000 cocaine deal, as per reports from Australian media. MacGill was arrested by the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad on Tuesday and has since been released on bail. He is due to appear in Manly Local Court on October 26.
The police allege that MacGill played a role in facilitating a deal between two individuals for the sale of 1kg of cocaine in 2019. This recent development comes after an investigation into MacGill’s alleged kidnapping in April 2021, where he was reportedly assaulted and threatened with a firearm before being dumped from a car.
MacGill, who represented Australia from 1998 to 2008, expressed his distress over the incident last year, stating, It was not something you’d even like to happen to your worst enemy. The former cricketer had been previously interviewed by the police regarding the alleged cocaine deal but was not charged at the time due to insufficient information.
Despite his career being overshadowed by Shane Warne, MacGill made a name for himself as a spinner, playing in 44 Test matches and taking 208 wickets. He also represented Australia in three ODIs. However, the recent charges against him carry a potential maximum penalty of life in jail.
As the case unfolds, it will be interesting to see how this incident impacts Stuart MacGill’s reputation and future. The cricketing community and fans alike will undoubtedly be following the proceedings closely.
