Four dead, including 2 forest rangers, as EV on trial run overturns
HARIDWAR: A tragic road accident claimed the lives of four individuals, including two forest rangers, during the trial run of an electric vehicle (EV) on the Chilla-Rishikesh road near the Chilla Barrage on Monday. The vehicle, an interceptor brought in for trials at the Rajaji Tiger Reserve, was primarily designed for chasing poachers due to its virtually noiseless operation.
The accident resulted in severe injuries to five individuals, who were immediately rushed to AIIMS, Rishikesh. Furthermore, one person, Aloki Devi, the wildlife warden of Chilla range, has gone missing after falling into a canal during the mishap.
Among the deceased was Shailesh Ghildiyal (42), a forest ranger at Chilla, who was also the younger brother of senior IAS officer Mangesh Ghildiyal serving in the Prime Minister’s Office. The other victims were Pramod Dhyani (43), a deputy ranger, Saif Ali Khan (25), a contract worker, and Kulraj Singh (35).
Pauri Garhwal SSP, Shweta Choubey, stated, Our initial findings indicate that the accident occurred due to a tire burst during the trial of a new vehicle, causing it to collide with a tree and overturn. However, a thorough investigation will be carried out, with finding Aloki Devi being our top priority at the moment.
The electric vehicle, being tested for its efficiency in wildlife conservation efforts, was expected to play a crucial role in combating poaching activities at the Rajaji Tiger Reserve. With its silent operation, it aimed to ensure the stealthy pursuit of offenders without alerting them.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the forest department, as the loss of experienced personnel and their dedication to conserving wildlife is deeply felt. The forest rangers and officials involved in the trial run were highly trained individuals with a strong commitment to environmental protection.
Expressing grief over the tragedy, a colleague of the deceased forest rangers said, Shailesh and Pramod were exemplary professionals who believed in safeguarding our precious wildlife at all costs. Their untimely demise is a significant loss to our department and a setback to the noble cause they served.
Efforts are underway to locate Aloki Devi, who fell into the canal during the accident. The search and rescue operation has been intensified to ensure her safe recovery.
