Ford will be recalling approximately 1.9 million Explorer SUVs in the United States due to a safety concern involving loose trim pieces that could detach while driving. This recall applies to Explorer models produced between 2011 and 2019. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released documents on Wednesday explaining that the clips securing the trim near the windshield and roof supports may become loose, potentially leading to the trim piece detaching and posing a hazard to other drivers. This action follows an investigation initiated by U.S. regulators in January 2022, prompted by 164 consumer complaints and inquiries from Canadian regulators.

Initially, Ford chose not to issue a recall, citing the relatively low mass of the affected part. However, after further investigation, U.S. regulators deemed the issue a safety hazard, prompting Ford to reverse its decision. The automaker anticipates that only 5% of the recalled Explorer SUVs will be affected by this problem. In the meantime, Ford advises owners to contact their dealerships and schedule an inspection once the necessary parts are available.

According to the documents, Ford is aware of 568 consumer complaints and over 14,000 warranty reports related to missing or detached trim pieces. However, the company claims it has not received reports of any accidents or injuries resulting from this issue. To address the problem, dealerships will examine the trim pieces to ensure the clips are securely engaged and will apply adhesive to keep them in place.

Considering the potential impact of this recall, Ford is taking the necessary steps to mitigate any dangers that may arise from these detachable trim pieces. Owners should prioritize contacting their dealerships for an inspection and follow any instructions provided by the automaker. By addressing the issue promptly, Ford aims to maintain the safety and reliability of its Explorer SUVs and ensure the well-being of drivers and other road users.

This recall serves as a reminder for automakers to prioritize the safety of their customers, and consumers should always monitor their vehicles for any potential defects or issues.
