Fluctuating Blood Pressure Linked to Increased Risk of Dementia, Warns Australian Study

In a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of South Australia (UniSA), it has been revealed that fluctuating blood pressure can significantly increase the risk of dementia and vascular problems in older individuals. The findings underscore the importance of not only monitoring high blood pressure but also taking into account the variability of blood pressure.

While it is well-established that high blood pressure is a risk factor for dementia, little attention has been given to the fluctuations in blood pressure levels. However, the UniSA study highlights the potential detrimental effects of these fluctuations on cognitive health. The researchers discovered that short-term and long-term variations in blood pressure are associated with impaired cognitive performance and arterial stiffness, which is often linked to heart disease.

Lead author Daria Gutteridge emphasized the need for clinical treatments to address not only hypertension but also the variability of blood pressure. The study examined the blood pressure measurements of 70 healthy older adults aged 60-80 years, who displayed no signs of dementia or cognitive impairment. Through cognitive tests and measurements of arterial stiffness in the brain and arteries, the researchers made significant observations.

The results of the study indicated that higher blood pressure variability within a day, as well as across multiple days, correlated with reduced cognitive performance. Moreover, variations in systolic blood pressure were found to be connected with increased blood vessel stiffness in the arteries. These findings suggest that the different types of blood pressure variability may be associated with distinct biological mechanisms, emphasizing the importance of considering both systolic and diastolic blood pressure variation for optimal cognitive functioning in older adults.

The researchers believe that blood pressure variability could potentially serve as an early clinical marker or treatment target for those at risk of cognitive impairment. By identifying these variations and intervening early, it may be possible to mitigate the risk of developing dementia and related vascular problems.

As the study brings attention to the impact of fluctuating blood pressure on dementia risk and cognitive health, future research is needed to better understand the underlying mechanisms and develop targeted interventions. By addressing both hypertension and blood pressure variability, healthcare professionals may be able to provide more comprehensive care for older individuals and reduce the burden of dementia in our aging population.

In conclusion, the UniSA study serves as a reminder of the importance of monitoring blood pressure not only for hypertension but also for its fluctuations. By recognizing the role that blood pressure variability plays in cognitive health, healthcare practitioners can take proactive steps towards preventing dementia and related vascular issues in older adults. With further research, the findings from this study may pave the way for new approaches to identifying and managing the risk of cognitive impairment.
