The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released data on Friday showing a significant jump in influenza cases over the past week as the illness sweeps across the nation. According to the Hill, the number of patients visiting their doctors due to respiratory illnesses is on the rise. The situation has particularly worsened in northern states. The CDC’s FluView webpage reveals that there has been an upward trend, with 17.5 percent of people testing positive for influenza in recent days. The agency estimates that there have been at least 10 million illnesses, 110,000 hospitalizations, and 6,500 deaths from flu so far this season.

Flu, caused by a virus in a person’s nose, throat, and lungs, can initially appear as a cold with symptoms like a runny nose, sneezing, and sore throat. However, the flu tends to come on quickly, making individuals feel much worse than a common cold. Common symptoms often include fever, aching muscles, chills, and sweats.

The Associated Press (AP) reported that thirty-eight states have reported high or very high levels of patients suffering from respiratory illnesses. Alicia Budd from the CDC stated, We expect it to be elevated for several more weeks, when speaking of the flu cases. However, she also mentioned that it has been a moderate flu season.

In New York City, officials have reinstated the mask mandate at all 11 public hospitals due to a rise in reported cases of the Chinese coronavirus, flu, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), according to Breitbart News.

It is crucial for individuals who exhibit flu symptoms and are at risk of complications to seek medical attention promptly. Antiviral medicines can help shorten the length of illness and prevent more serious problems. Implementing preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, wearing masks, and avoiding close contact with infected individuals can also help reduce the spread of the flu.

As the flu continues to surge, it is important for individuals to prioritize their health and take necessary precautions to prevent further transmission. Monitoring flu symptoms, seeking medical attention when required, and following guidelines provided by healthcare professionals can contribute to reducing the impact of the flu season.
