Two Florida Men Arrested in $1M Uber Eats Theft Scheme

Two men from Florida have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a theft scheme that targeted the popular food delivery service, Uber Eats. Trayon Morgan, 21, of Lauderhill, and Roy Blackwood, 38, of Sunrise, are facing charges of an organized scheme to defraud and grand theft.

According to authorities, the scheme is estimated to have netted the suspects at least $1 million. It is believed that the criminal activity began in January 2022 and involved the suspects using phony accounts or fake names.

Trayon Morgan, operating as a customer, would place a grocery order using a fake account on Uber Eats. He would then accept the order at a Walgreens store, masquerading as an Uber Eats courier. Typically, the courier would purchase the ordered items using a prepaid credit card provided by Uber. However, Morgan would cancel the order as the bogus customer and swiftly enter the store to buy gift cards with the money on the prepaid credit card instead.

Detectives from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office observed the suspects engaging in fraudulent activities at various Walgreens stores. On January 24, 2023, they witnessed Morgan and Blackwood visiting 27 different stores, resulting in a total loss of $5,013.28 for Uber on that day alone.

During their investigation, authorities discovered that Morgan’s identity was linked to several fake accounts, which were connected to approximately 800 trips primarily conducted in Florida. The thefts occurred in multiple counties, stretching as far north as South Georgia.

Blackwood is believed to have played a role in driving Morgan to the different Walgreens stores involved in the alleged fraud.

The arrests of Morgan and Blackwood shed light on the potential vulnerabilities faced by online platforms like Uber Eats. The incident serves as a reminder for companies to remain vigilant in their efforts to prevent fraudulent activities and protect their users.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the case will likely draw attention from Uber Eats users and stakeholders, who will be interested in how the company responds to the situation and whether any changes will be implemented to enhance security measures.

It is crucial for users of digital platforms to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities. By working together, online communities can contribute to creating a safer environment for everyone.
