Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced plans to send drones, weapons, and ammunition to Israel amid escalating tensions in the region. This move comes as DeSantis competes in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, and it follows previous official responses in support of Israel by the governor. The state of Florida has already sent cargo planes containing health care supplies, drones, body armor, and helmets to Israel. In addition to the government-funded supplies, private groups have also contributed unspecified amounts of weapons and ammunition.

According to spokesperson Jeremy Redfern from the governor’s office, these actions were taken at the request of Israel’s consul general in Miami, Maor Elbaz-Starinsky. However, Elbaz-Starinsky initially denied making any requests for drones, body armor, helmets, or assistance with obtaining weapons and ammunition through private parties. He later clarified that other members of the Israeli government had been in communication with DeSantis’ office to determine the aid that would be sent.

Notably, this announcement coincides with the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual gathering of donors in Las Vegas, where DeSantis and other GOP presidential contenders are expected to attend. DeSantis is scheduled to deliver a speech on Saturday morning.

It remains unclear whether DeSantis coordinated these shipments of weapons with the Biden administration. The Commerce Department is responsible for regulating the export of various types of U.S. weapons and technology. While it is not illegal for a state governor to offer foreign assistance, specific laws and regulations govern the export process.

Exporting military equipment typically requires a license or authorization from either the Commerce or State Departments, depending on the nature of the items. The Commerce Department has stated that it is working to expedite applications for assistance to Israel and is in close contact with the Israeli government. However, no details regarding specific transactions have been provided.

Overall, DeSantis’ decision to send drones, weapons, and ammunition to Israel comes during a period of heightened tensions in the region. While it remains to be seen how this move will be received globally and domestically, the governor’s action underscores Florida’s support for Israel and its commitment to assisting in times of crisis.
