Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Withdraws from Republican Primary, Endorses Trump for 2024
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced his withdrawal from the Republican party’s presidential primary race, throwing his support behind former US president Donald Trump for the party’s nomination. The move narrows the Republican field to just two candidates, with Indian American former governor Nikki Haley as the only contender left in the race against Trump.
DeSantis, once seen as a formidable challenger to Trump, acknowledged that a majority of Republican primary voters prefer to give Trump another chance. In a video message posted on social media, DeSantis stated, While I have had disagreements with Donald Trump… Trump is superior to the current incumbent, Joe Biden. That is clear.
Having previously signed a pledge to support the Republican nominee, DeSantis expressed his endorsement for Trump. He emphasized the need to move away from the traditional Republican establishment, which he believes Haley represents: We can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear. However, she emphasized that voters deserved a say in the direction of the party, stating, We’re not a country of coronations… Voters deserve a say in whether we go down the road of Trump and Biden again or we go down a new conservative road.
