Flood Situation in Assam Worsens as Water Levels in Brahmaputra Continue to Rise

The flood situation in Assam remains critical as water levels in the Brahmaputra River continue to rise in many parts of the state. All major rivers in Assam are now flowing above the danger mark, causing widespread flooding in the region.

Several districts, including Chirang and Bongaigaon, have already been severely affected by the floods. The increase in water levels is primarily due to incessant rainfall across the state, exacerbating the situation.

To make matters worse, neighboring Bhutan has started releasing excess water from its Kurichu dam, prompting authorities to put downstream areas of Assam on high alert for possible flooding.

According to officials, a total of 17 districts in Assam are currently affected by the floods, impacting nearly 67,000 people. The worst-hit district is Biswanath, where over 32,400 people have been affected so far. In the Gohpur revenue circle areas alone, 22,417 people have been affected, while nearly 10,000 people have been affected in the Halem revenue circle areas.

In Biswanath Sub-Division alone, 47 villages have been submerged, and 858 hectares of crop area have been inundated. Overall, 1.08 lakh people from 385 villages across 31 revenue circles in 15 districts and two sub-divisions have been affected by the floods. The floodwaters have also submerged 4,168.40 hectares of crop area.

To provide relief to the affected residents, the administration has set up 22 relief camps and 71 relief distribution centers in the flood-affected districts. Currently, around 4,275 people are taking shelter in these camps.

The flood has also taken a toll on livestock, with more than 72,300 domestic animals and poultry being affected by the deluge.

Rescue and relief operations are underway in the flood-affected areas, with teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Fire & Emergency Services, and local administration working tirelessly to provide assistance.

Apart from Biswanath, other districts severely affected by the floods include Golaghat, Dhemaji, Majuli, Dibrugarh, Chirang, Dhubri, and Sivasagar. The floods have caused widespread damage and disruption in these areas, affecting thousands of residents.

As the flood situation in Assam remains grim, it is crucial for authorities to take swift action to mitigate the impact on the affected communities. Efforts should be made to provide immediate relief and support to those in need, while also focusing on long-term measures to tackle the recurring issue of floods in the region.
