The construction of 76 flats for the poor on land seized from slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed is nearing completion in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The flats are being built on a 1731 square meter plot of land that was freed from Ahmed’s possession in the Lukerganj area. The chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, had laid the foundation stone for the affordable housing project on December 26, 2021.

The District Urban Development Authorities (DUDA) are overseeing the construction under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and two blocks of 76 flats are being built. Once the flats are completed, they will be handed over to the poor by Chief Minister Adityanath.

Ahmed was accused of the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal, and was also linked to the killing of a key witness in that case earlier this year. He and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead by men who posed as journalists on April 15 while they were being taken for a medical examination in Prayagraj.

The apartments for the poor are on the plot of land taken from Ahmed’s possession, and the project’s completion marks an important step towards providing affordable housing to the underprivileged.
