The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has commenced a phased demolition drive at Bhoomiheen Camp, following the relocation of eligible jhuggi-jhopdi (JJ) dwellers to their allotted flats. The demolition operation was conducted in accordance with the Delhi Slum and Jhuggi Jhopri Rehabilitation and Relocation Policy of 2015. All eligible 1,862 JJ dwellers have been assigned flats at A-14, Kalkaji Extension and so far, 1,200 have already relocated. At an estimated cost of Rs. 345 crore, DDA has constructed EWS flats on 10.75 hectares of land to provide housing for eligible JJ dwellers in Bhoomiheen Camp. Beneficiaries had to pay Rs 1.1 lakh against the cost of roughly Rs 15 lakh for the allotted flat.
Officials propose the rehabilitation of eligible JJ dwellers of adjoining JJ colonies in an in-situ style after developing the land beneath Bhoomiheen Camp. The relocation of people from Bhoomiheen Camp remains crucial to expedite the rehabilitation process of two additional JJ clusters complete with basic urban amenities. The demolition took place after giving due notice, with public announcements made to affected communities.
DDA’s demolition of the structures at Bhoomiheen Camp clears the way for future revitalization of the area, expanding housing capacity and essential facilities for eligible JJ dwellers. The effort is key to improving the overall livelihoods of the relocating individuals and the city’s disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
