The National Security Agency’s (NSA) Center for Cryptologic History revealed that five prominent figures in the field of cryptology will be inducted into the Cryptologic Hall of Honor in 2023. This esteemed group of individuals has made significant contributions to American signals intelligence and played crucial roles in the nation’s history.

One of the inductees is Evelyn Akeley, whose exceptional improvisation skills in a high-stress environment exemplify the finest traditions of American signals intelligence in the past century. Her remarkable accomplishments during World War II were surpassed only by the achievements of her students, who successfully deciphered numerous Japanese army codes. Akeley retired in 1958, ranking as the sixth most senior woman at NSA.

Another notable inductee is James Lovell, touted by William Friedman as the one-man National Security Agency of the American Revolution. Lovell’s pioneering work as a codebreaker and codemaker played a vital role in the formation of the nation. Leveraging his decrypts, George Washington was able to warn his French allies of a British relief force’s approach, leading to a decisive victory at Yorktown. Lovell serves as a significant figure in the history of American cryptology and sets an example for present and future generations.

Major General Joseph Mauborgne, a pioneer in multiple areas of communications technology and cryptology, including his co-invention of the One-Time Pad, joins the illustrious list of inductees. His leadership and foresight contributed to the United States’ victory in World War II and initiated the iconic Special Relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom. Mauborgne’s exceptional abilities earned praise from William Friedman, who regarded him as the Signal Corps’ finest director.

James Radford, with his groundbreaking work on Special Purpose Devices, deserves recognition for tackling complex analytical challenges and enhancing supercomputers’ performance exponentially. His innovative projects proved the possibility of secure collaborations between NSA and contractors, becoming a catalyst for fruitful partnerships. Radford’s revolutionary ideas at NSA and the Institute of Defense Analyses effectively addressed the communication and computing revolutions of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

The final inductee, Harry Rashbaum, revolutionized language analysis through the introduction of computer-based tools for translation, transcription, and language teaching. As a practicing linguist, Rashbaum raised language analysts’ standards and advocated for improved promotions and incentive awards within NSA. His influence through publications and mentoring continues to positively impact NSA’s language work to this day.

Further details about the 2023 inductees will be shared following an upcoming induction ceremony. The NSA will also issue a call for nominations in early 2024, encouraging individuals and groups to submit their recommendations at any time.

As the NSA honors these remarkable individuals, their contributions remind us of the significance of cryptology in safeguarding national security and shaping world events. The induction of these five extraordinary figures reinforces the legacy of excellence within the intelligence community and serves as an inspiration for future generations of cryptologic professionals.
