Each team consists of two members aged 13 to 21, along with one younger than 13. They are given 30 minutes to prepare their animals, just like they would for a real show. The contest culminates in a mini-showmanship event, allowing participants to demonstrate their skills and present their animals to the judges.
Fitting in livestock is crucial to ensure animals are presented in their best possible light. Participants employ a range of techniques, including blow drying the hair with industrial-strength livestock blowers, using adhesives similar to hairspray to achieve the desired fluffiness, and trimming any unruly hairs. Show halters are added, and the animals are given a drink before being showcased by a member of the team.
The pace during the contest is frantic, with team members multitasking to perfect the animals’ appearances. Whether teasing a tail into a full ball, fluffing up hair on legs, or taming stray hairs, every detail matters. Good fitting can make a dramatic difference in the animal’s presentation to the judges, potentially elevating participants to the top of the competition.
Throughout the contest, door prizes are awarded to participants, including useful items like round brushes, adhesive sprays, and buckets. These prizes, supported by sponsors ranging from parents to larger companies like Hubbard Feeds and Sullivan Supply, contribute to the success of the event.
While the fitting contest is a highlight, it’s not the only activity happening at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds. Various livestock shows, including those for open, 4-H, and FFA participants, keep the fairgrounds buzzing with excitement.
