For the first time in Lucknow, a private hospital has successfully conducted a swap renal transplant procedure. The surgery may shorten the waitlist for patients in need of kidney transplants by increasing the pool of potential donors. Two individuals and their families voluntarily consented to give a kidney to the recipient’s needy spouse, leading to two live donor transplants.
Bhola Nath and Ravi Kant, both suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD), were searching for a compatible match since 2021. Both patients’ spouses had offered to give their kidneys, but after thorough tests, the necessary matching was not reached. Doctors from Chandan Hospital’s urology and transplant department, Dr. Manmeet Singh and Dr. Imran Ahmed, apprised the families about the swap renal transplant procedure, where a living donor is incompatible with their recipient but is compatible with another person. With their approval obtained, the necessary formalities were started, followed by clearances from the anesthesia department and eventually the procedure.
According to Alok Singh, Director of Chandan Hospital, Many people even pass away while waiting for the right donor. The switch transplant option will increase the number of potential donors. The surgery may help reduce the waiting time for patients in need of kidney transplants and provide them with a second chance at life.
The hospital aims to raise public awareness about the procedure so that more potential donors can come forward to help those in need. Swap renal transplant procedures can offer new hope to those with ESRD and their families. With these advancements, doctors hope to save more lives in the future.
