Fired Cop Faces Dismissal from Police Force over Scandalous Affair
A former senior police officer in Australia has been dismissed from her position following a scandalous affair involving her husband and her ex-best friend. Sandi-Lee Mellon, 47, was fired from her senior role in the police force after a series of alleged offences, including threatening to kill her husband’s mistress. The affair came to light in August last year when Mellon discovered that her husband, acting senior-sergeant Neil Mellon, had been having a two-year affair with her ex-beauty queen best friend, Narelle Jose.
The betrayal and emotional turmoil led Mellon to confront Jose at her home, where she allegedly threw a basketball trolley to the ground and issued threats. Mellon denies these claims, stating that she is the victim in this situation. However, her alleged behavior did not go unnoticed, as earlier that same day, police had raided her house and charged her husband with 32 offences related to a fatal helicopter crash that occurred six months prior, resulting in the death of reality TV star Chris ‘Willow’ Wilson. The charges against Neil Mellon include attempting to pervert the course of justice, stealing, unlawfully accessing data, and alleged destruction of evidence in a major crash investigation.
In the aftermath of the crash and her husband’s arrest, Sandi-Lee Mellon found herself embroiled in her own legal troubles. She faced six alleged disciplinary breaches, including sharing confidential information about the helicopter crash and alleged illegal possession of saltwater crocodile skulls. These breaches ultimately led to her dismissal from her role as head of the NT’s Water Police Unit.
Following an appeal against her termination, Assistant Commissioner Bruce Porter issued a final ‘public interest dismissal’ notice to Mellon on September 8. While Mellon cited immense stress as a result of her husband’s arrest and the affair, Porter maintained that her alleged conduct was serious and grounds for dismissal. He explained that the decision to terminate her employment was made in the public interest, despite the high standard of proof required for such a dismissal.
Sandi-Lee Mellon expressed her dissatisfaction with the dismissal, referring to it as a witch hunt. She claimed that her decades-long service in the police force, along with an untarnished record, should have been taken into consideration. Mellon also denied any knowledge of the ammunition, prohibited weapons, fireworks, or crocodile skulls found at her home during the police raid, describing the assumptions as misogynistic.
In addition to her dismissal and legal troubles, Sandi-Lee Mellon filed a formal complaint against the police executive, accusing them of bullying and failing to support her mental health. The criminal charges against her will be mentioned in Darwin Local Court on September 28.
