The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken swift action after a fire broke out at the Ghazipur landfill on Monday. As a precautionary measure, fire tenders have been provided at all three landfills, with staff at the sites trained and instructed to contact the fire department immediately in case of any future fires. The MCD has also installed spark arrestors on all vehicles coming to the landfills, which prevent flammable debris from being emitted, while CCTV cameras and adequate lighting at the sites have also been ensured.
Officials said that 14 fire tenders, 13 excavators, and four to five bulldozers were used to put out the flames at Ghazipur, highlighting the need for rapid action in future instances of landfill fires. The measures implemented by the MCD aim to prevent any potential hazards and ensure the safety of those in the area.
The new precautions signify a joint venture between MCD staff and the fire department, with the teams undergoing drill-cum-training to handle any incidents that may arise. With the help of adequate monitoring and illumination facilities, the MCD aims to maintain a safe and healthy environment for residents in the vicinity.
As the MCD addresses the issue of landfill fires, it aims to rectify the underlying causes of this problem by providing better waste management solutions and sustainable methods to dispose of rubbish. The approach not only benefits the environment but also supports a cleaner and better lifestyle for residents.
The move highlights the growing concern for landfill fires, which have hit several Indian cities, with the situation exacerbated by poor waste management practices. The MCD’s efforts set an example for other cities grappling with this issue in implementing effective waste management strategies to counter the fire risk and build cleaner and greener communities.
