A piece of equipment atop a 72-story high-rise under construction in Lower Manhattan caught fire on Wednesday morning, sending plumes of smoke into the air. Thick black smoke billowed from 125 Greenwich Street, an under-construction luxury residential skyscraper in New York’s Financial District, close to Ground Zero in lower Manhattan. The building, which has been in development for over five years, faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic. At around 9:40 a.m. ET, a helicopter circled the building as multiple fire crews and an ambulance rushed to the scene. The FDNY confirmed containment of the fire at approximately 10:06 a.m. Concerned onlookers gathered near Liberty Street and Greenwich Street as the building, situated two blocks south of One World Trade Center, faced the blaze.
