Financial literacy is a crucial life skill that often goes overlooked in traditional education systems. Many schools fail to teach students about topics like mortgages, taxes, and credit, leaving them ill-prepared for real-world financial responsibilities. Iesha Smith, the CEO and founder of MDCT Credit Solutions, recognized this gap in financial education and decided to address it in her community of Wilcox County in Alabama.

Smith, a pioneer in financial literacy, has taken an interactive approach to teaching kids and young adults about money management. She writes children’s books specifically designed to make complex financial concepts more accessible to young minds. Smith then visits local schools and youth organizations to initiate conversations about responsible financing using her books as a tool.

The inspiration for Smith’s work came from her 9-year-old daughter, Malena, who would often ask questions about credit cards and credit. Determined to provide her daughter with a clear understanding of these topics, Smith realized the importance of creating resources that parents could use to discuss finances with their children. This idea led her to write her book, Mom… Dad… What’s Credit?, which features relatable characters and discusses topics such as creditworthiness, budgeting, investing, and setting financial goals.

Smith also offers practical tips for parents, like issuing allowances using debit cards to familiarize kids with card usage and suggesting kid-friendly stocks to introduce them to the concept of investing. Her book includes chore charts, budgeting worksheets, credit-related puzzles, and coloring sheets to engage children while they learn about money management.

The impact of Smith’s work has been remarkable. She partnered with Rayshell White, owner of a local print shop, to distribute her books more widely. Smith then spoke at three public schools in Wilcox County, where she read her books to students and engaged them in conversations about budgeting and money management. The children responded positively and appreciated the opportunity to learn about saving money.

The success of the book tour led to an exciting development. The Wilcox County School System recognized the value of Smith’s work and decided to incorporate her books into the curriculum for the upcoming school year. Starting in the fall, elementary school students in Wilcox County will have the chance to learn about financial literacy using Smith’s books.

Additionally, Smith has extended her reach beyond schools. She has spoken to members of the 4-H Youth Council at the Wilcox County Alabama Extension office, ensuring that even more children have access to her valuable resources. Her books are also available through the BAMA Kids program, putting financial literacy directly in the hands of children.

While Smith continues to make a difference in financial education, she hasn’t forgotten her primary role as an entrepreneur and credit consultant. Through her business, MDCT Credit Solutions, she helps individuals navigate credit-related challenges and works towards making their dreams come true. Smith believes that genuine help and a focus on doing right by others are the keys to success, both personally and professionally.

By prioritizing financial literacy and engaging children at a young age, Iesha Smith is making a positive impact on her community. Her books provide an accessible and engaging way for parents and educators to teach money management skills, preparing young individuals for a financially savvy adulthood. With the support of the Wilcox County School System, Smith’s work will continue to empower children with the knowledge they need to make informed financial decisions throughout their lives.
