Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) in India has taken a revolutionary step by deciding to offer financial aid to underprivileged students who have cleared the preliminary examinations for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) civil services and the Odisha Administrative Services (OAS) conducted by the UPSC and Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC). The aim is to provide assistance to poor students for their preparation for the main and interview examinations.
According to BeMC commissioner J Sonal, the amount and other details related to the assistance will be finalised during the next corporation meeting scheduled for next month. The move is expected to motivate students from low-income groups to pursue their dream of becoming civil servants.
BeMC mayor Sanghamitra Dalai has hailed the move as the first of its kind by a civic body in India. She added that this step would go a long way in ensuring that students from humble backgrounds also take up civil service roles and make a positive contribution to society.
It is heartening to see civic bodies take such steps to help deserving students to achieve their dreams. The decision by BeMC will be a major boost to those who have limited resources and cannot afford to meet the expenses of preparation for these competitive examinations. Such initiatives pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable society that provides equal opportunities to all.
