FIFA and UN Women Partner to End Violence Against Women at Women’s World Cup Semi Final

In a historic collaboration, FIFA and UN Women are joining forces to send a strong message against violence towards women during the upcoming Semi Final 1 match between Spain and Sweden at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Taking place at Eden Park Tāmaki Makaurau, the match will carry the theme Unite for Ending Violence Against Women to highlight the importance of ensuring the safety, inclusivity, and respect of women and girls both on and off the football field.

Disturbing global statistics reveal that approximately one in three women, a staggering 736 million, have experienced physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their lifetime. Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) knows no boundaries, affecting individuals regardless of their age, race, religion, culture, location, or economic status. This deeply ingrained violation of human rights hinders the freedoms of women and girls, depriving them of the same opportunities and rights enjoyed by men and boys. It restricts their participation in education, employment, public life, and limits access to essential services, cultural activities, sports, and recreational pursuits. Moreover, it adversely impacts their overall health and well-being.

The presence of Her Excellency, The Rt Hon Dame Cindy Kiro, GNZM, QSO Governor-General of New Zealand and UN Women Aotearoa NZ Vice-Regal Patron at this significant match underscores the commitment to championing the Unite for Ending Violence Against Women message.

Her Excellency’s support signifies the importance of uniting against gender-based violence and working towards a world where all women and girls can live free from the threat of violence and realize their full potential, said Tara Singh, President of UN Women Aotearoa New Zealand.

FIFA and UN Women invite all spectators, both at the stadium and watching from around the world, to come together in solidarity for this crucial cause. Let us stand united in raising awareness about the urgency of ending violence against women and girls and creating an environment based on equality, respect, and safety.
