Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the Popular Party (PP) in Spain, is making a final push in his campaign to secure votes that will allow him to govern without the support of the far-right party Vox. Feijóo has faced criticism from the opposition, including the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), for aligning with Vox in certain regions and being perceived as a copy of the far-right party.

However, Feijóo’s campaign has gained momentum, with his popularity soaring after a significant face-to-face encounter during the campaign. According to sources within the PP leadership, this encounter marked a turning point and boosted the support for Feijóo. The party believes that Spain now recognizes Feijóo as a better candidate than Pedro Sánchez, the current President of the Government.

Feijóo’s goal is to secure around 150 deputies in order to win the election and govern without the need for Vox’s support. The PP is confident that they will achieve a broader result and secure more votes than both the left-wing parties and those aligned with them, including the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC). This would make it impossible for them to form an alternative government, even if the PP and Vox together reach an absolute majority.

To appeal to a wider spectrum of voters, including those who are hesitant to vote for Feijóo due to concerns over Vox, the PP leader has adopted a more conciliatory tone. He aims to govern without coercion or ties, presenting himself as a moderate alternative focused on improving what has been done wrong and leaving intact what has been done well. Feijóo does not seek revenge against the current government but rather wants to govern for the benefit of all citizens.

In the final stages of the campaign, Feijóo emphasized reaching out to socialist voters who may be disenchanted with their own party. The President of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, urged these voters to reclaim their party by supporting Alberto Núñez Feijóo and stated that the PSOE needs to be in opposition to spark regeneration.

With the election approaching, Feijóo hopes to secure a decisive victory that will allow him to form a government without the need for alliances with Vox. His message resonates with voters who desire a change, free from blackmail and focused on the people’s interests. Feijóo’s ability to appeal to a wider audience, including disenchanted socialists, may prove crucial in determining the outcome of the election and shaping the future political landscape in Spain.
