FAU Head Coach Tom Herman Reflects on First Practice and Sets Expectations for Football Season

Football season is officially underway in Boca Raton as the FAU Owls kick off their fall training camp. Newly appointed head coach, Tom Herman, brings a wealth of experience with him from his previous head coaching positions at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Houston. After the team’s first practice, Herman addressed the media to discuss his initial impressions and expectations for the upcoming season.

Herman acknowledged that the team displayed a lack of energy towards the end of practice, attributing it to the heat and humidity. However, he emphasized that it is still early in the process, and he remains unfazed by the performance on the field. Drawing from his coaching experience, he understands the importance of not overreacting to a single practice. According to Herman, the only way to get into game shape is by playing football itself.

Even though the players were only in helmets, Herman highlighted several aspects that he could evaluate. He mentioned effort, assignment execution, and stance as some of the factors that stood out during the practice. Wide receivers’ route running and how defensive backs covered them were also points of evaluation. Herman acknowledged that it might not truly replicate game situations, but he believes there are still valuable insights to be gained from these early sessions.

One of the key areas Herman focused on during the practice was the defense. With new defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni on board, the Owls are aiming to improve their performance, particularly in passing defense and yards allowed per game. Defensive tackle Evan Anderson, who made his presence known last season despite a foot injury, expressed the need for the defense to step up and adapt to Bellantoni’s coaching style.

On the offensive side of the ball, junior wide receiver Lajohntay Wester emphasized his desire to take on a leadership role in the locker room while continuing to be a catalyst for the team’s offense. Wester has been the top receiver for the Owls in the past two seasons, and he aims to not only improve his own game but also help younger players learn their assignments and responsibilities.

The quarterback position is another area of focus for the Owls. Grad transfer Casey Thompson, who played under Herman at the University of Texas, competed with junior Daniel Richardson and redshirt sophomore Tyriq Starks during the first practice. While Herman acknowledged that all three quarterbacks had their moments, he emphasized the need for improvement. The team will take its time before naming a starter, likely around ten days before the first game, to ensure the selected quarterback has sufficient time to prepare and gain the majority of reps.

In conclusion, Coach Tom Herman remains optimistic about the team’s progress despite the challenges faced during the first practice. He understands that it is a gradual process and acknowledges the importance of evaluating various aspects of the game, even during practices where players are limited to helmets. With a focus on enhancing both the defense and offense, the FAU Owls are gearing up for an exciting and competitive football season under their new head coach.
