A tragic incident unfolded in the state of Madhya Pradesh recently, highlighting the harrowing consequences of sexual harassment. A man took his own life after allegedly receiving threats from a person accused of abetting his daughter’s suicide. The daughter, just 18 years old, had tragically ended her life a month and a half earlier, after accusing six men of sexually harassing her.

The incident led to a case being registered at the Nateran police station, and one of the accused, identified as Sudeep Dhakad, was arrested. However, according to the deceased man’s family, Dhakad was out on bail and had been incessantly harassing the family to withdraw the complaint. They claim that he and eight others were continuously tormenting the man, who also left a suicide note implicating nine individuals.

In response to the tragic events, Madhya Pradesh’s home minister, Narottam Mishra, has ordered an inquiry led by a deputy inspector general (DIG). As a preliminary action, the in-charge of the Nateran police station and a head constable have been suspended for alleged negligence.

Vidisha Police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against the six accused mentioned in both the father and daughter’s suicide notes. Three individuals have already been arrested in connection with the incident, with authorities working to apprehend the others involved. The additional superintendent of police, Sameer Yadav, stated that previous action had been taken against the accused according to the law and that the investigation is ongoing.

In the wake of the tragedy, Congress leaders staged a protest, accusing the police of inaction due to political pressure. They also alleged that Sudeep Dhakad is a worker for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Congress MLA Shashank Bhargava claimed that Dhakad had been harassing the girl and physically assaulting her family members. He criticized the police for not arresting Dhakad when the initial complaint was filed and only charging him under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after the girl’s death. Dhakad had been released on bail after a month.

It is essential to address cases of sexual harassment seriously and ensure that justice is served to the victims. The loss of two lives in this tragic incident underscores the urgent need for a thorough investigation and strict actions against those responsible for the harassment. The allegations of political pressure and police inaction should also be thoroughly examined to restore public trust in the justice system.
