A signal error has been identified as the cause of the train derailment in eastern India that killed almost 300 people and injured hundreds more, according to officials. The railways minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said an error in the electronic signalling system caused the train to switch tracks, leading to the accident on Friday. Authorities have revised the death toll and said that at least 275 people died and around 400 people were being treated for injuries. The accident is raising new concerns about safety and modernisation in India’s rail network. The derailment has brought into question plans to bring 100% electric trains to India by 2024.
