Fatal Hit-and-Run: Stolen Car Collides, Killing Two in Oakland
In a tragic incident that took place over the weekend, two individuals lost their lives in a hit-and-run collision in Oakland. The authorities have now identified the victims as 64-year-old Derrick Shaw from Richmond, who was the driver, and 67-year-old Vera Hampton from Antioch, who was the passenger in the vehicle. Our hearts go out to their families and friends during this difficult time.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning, shortly before 10 a.m., when the victims’ car was traveling south on 73rd Avenue and attempted to make a left turn onto Holly Street. A stolen Lexus, reportedly taken from Daly City, was speeding northbound on 73rd Avenue when it collided with the passenger side of the victims’ vehicle. The impact was so intense that the victims’ car rolled over and collided with a parked vehicle nearby, resulting in their tragic deaths.
A 48-year-old man from Richmond, who was riding in the rear of the victims’ car, sustained injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The nature and severity of his injuries are not yet known.
Following the collision, the suspect, a 25-year-old Oakland man, abandoned the stolen Lexus, which had suffered significant damage to its front end, and fled the scene of the incident on foot. However, thanks to the swift response of the Oakland Police Department, the suspect was apprehended shortly afterward on suspicion of the fatal hit-and-run.
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, including whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident. If anyone has any information related to the case, they are urged to contact the Oakland Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit at (510) 777-8570.
