Cuban Population Satisfied with Organic Potato Production

Although the Agriculture authorities recognized that the productive results will not cover all the demand, it is an additional delivery to the national distribution that will reach the people of Sancti Spiritus.

In the current campaign, about 34 hectares are being planted with seed produced by local producers farmers, according to Eduardo Jimenez, head of the Agricultural Department. He also acknowledged that it is an extraordinary experience to avoid the expense of acquiring national or imported seed. The planting has already been carried out, except in Trinidad, in seven of the eight municipalities of the territory.

This new endeavor has seen 12 new cultivators joining the cause, with others showing interest for the next harvest, as producing this tuber in small areas for local self-sufficiency using biological means is significant given the limitations for acquiring the same seed abroad.

In previous years, imported seed was planted in territories with irrigation machines to increase yields and meet the population’s demands. This year, however, the focus has shifted to organic production and maximizing local resources.

Jimenez commented that this program has made its way into the province for the third time, highlighting the importance of promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Although the organic potato production will not be able to cover the entirety of the demand, it serves as a vital supplementary measure to national distribution. The local population in Sancti Spiritus has expressed satisfaction with the initiative, as it contributes towards ensuring food security and reducing dependence on imports.

The shift towards organic farming methods reflects a growing global trend towards sustainable agriculture. By utilizing local resources and producing organically, Cuba is taking steps to reduce its reliance on external sources and prioritize self-sufficiency. This not only benefits the environment but also strengthens the country’s resilience in the face of potential disruptions in the global food supply chain.

Furthermore, the involvement of local producers in this venture not only stimulates the local economy but also empowers farmers to actively contribute to the well-being of their communities. Through the cultivation of organic potatoes, they are directly addressing the specific needs of the local population in Sancti Spiritus, ensuring they have access to high-quality produce.

While there is still progress to be made in terms of meeting the overall demand for potatoes, the organic production initiative serves as a promising step forward. The positive response from the Cuban population indicates a recognition of the efforts being made to secure food sovereignty and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

As the campaign continues, it is expected that the organic potato production will expand further, drawing the interest of more cultivators and potentially inspiring similar initiatives in other regions of the country. In a time marked by global challenges and uncertainties, Cuba’s commitment to organic farming demonstrates its determination to create a more resilient and sustainable food system for its people.

In conclusion, the implementation of organic potato production in Sancti Spiritus has garnered the satisfaction of the Cuban population. Despite not fully meeting the demand, the initiative represents a significant step towards achieving self-sufficiency, reducing reliance on imports, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. As more local farmers join the cause, the future of organic farming in Cuba looks promising, showcasing the country’s commitment to food security and environmental responsibility.
