Families in Las Vegas Turn to Salvation Army’s Back-to-School Supplies Amid Rising Costs

As the new school year approaches, families across the Las Vegas Valley are facing the financial pressure of rising back-to-school costs. To alleviate the burden, many are seeking the assistance of organizations like The Salvation Army of Southern Nevada, which is providing backpacks filled with essential supplies to families in need.

The Salvation Army’s Backpack & School Supply Distribution Drive-thru event has become a lifeline for families struggling to afford the necessary items for the upcoming school year. With prices skyrocketing, the event aims to support over a thousand children from Henderson to Pahrump and Mesquite.

Juan Salinas, the Director of Social Services with The Salvation Army of Southern Nevada, expressed his satisfaction in seeing the positive impact the event has on the community. He shared, This year we are helping over a thousand kids from Henderson to Pahrump and Mesquite.

The backpacks distributed through this initiative are well-equipped with everything from pencils and pens to notebook paper, rulers, glue, and carrying cases. Parents like Heather Lotta, a mother of five, took advantage of the opportunity by signing up in advance and selecting an arrival time to collect the supplies. Lotta shared her reasons for participating, saying, With the economy being so bad and not having money for essentials like rent, that’s why I came.

According to the National Retail Federation, back-to-school spending is expected to reach $41.5 billion this year, which is approximately $4 billion more than the previous year. On average, families with children in elementary through high school are planning to spend a record-breaking $890 on back-to-school items, around $25 more than in 2022.

The surge in expenses has forced many families to seek assistance, and organizations like The Salvation Army are stepping in to bridge the gap. By offering free school supplies, they aim to ensure that every child has the necessary resources to thrive academically.

The challenging economic conditions have made it difficult for families to meet their financial obligations and provide for their children’s education. The rising costs of school supplies, coupled with other expenses, have stretched budgets to the limit. This has resulted in an increased reliance on community support programs such as the one offered by The Salvation Army.

In addition to providing much-needed supplies, events like the Backpack & School Supply Distribution Drive-thru offer a sense of hope and relief for families. By alleviating the financial strain, parents can focus on their children’s education without the added worry of purchasing expensive supplies.

As the school year begins, it is important to remember that affordability should never hinder a child’s access to quality education. Community initiatives like The Salvation Army’s drive-thru event play a vital role in ensuring that every child has an equal opportunity to succeed.

The Salvation Army’s efforts, coupled with the support of the community, demonstrate the power of collective action in addressing societal challenges. By coming together, we can make a difference in the lives of children and families who need it most. Let us continue to support such initiatives and work towards a future where every child can embark on their educational journey with confidence and optimism.
