A man has been arrested in Gurugram for allegedly extorting Rs 50,000 from a person while posing as a police officer. The victim had filed a complaint that a person contacted him through a website and requested a service. The suspect then called the complainant to Cyber Park Sector-39 and introduced himself as a policeman. He then threatened to send him to jail for committing a cyber crime. The victim, fearing for his life, transferred Rs 50,000 from his brother’s account to the account mentioned by the suspects. The accused then threatened the victim with dire consequences if he revealed the matter to anyone and demanded the remaining amount. Police registered a case at the Sadar Police Station and eventually nabbed one of the suspects, Sunil Kumar, from Jaipur in Rajasthan.
During the investigation, Kumar confessed to the crime, admitting he and his associates were involved in the act. The police also recovered a Swift DZire car used in the crime from Kumar’s possession. The accused has been charged under Section 384 (extortion) and Section 170 (impersonating a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code. Police continue to search for the other suspects involved in the crime. The arrest serves as a reminder to the public to remain vigilant and wary of individuals claiming to be police officers, especially in such cases of cybercrime.
