In a disturbing incident that has been widely shared on social media, a video showing the lifeless body of a woman lying on a blood-stained road has been falsely attributed to the controversial concept of Love Jihad. This conspiracy theory, associated with far-right Hindu groups, alleges that Muslim men target Hindu women with the intention of converting them to Islam through marriage. However, it has been revealed that the accused and the victim in this case were both Hindus, dispelling any communal angle.
The video sparked outrage as it was shared with false claims that the dead woman was Hindu and had been killed by her Muslim boyfriend in Mullahera village, Gurugram, located in the northern state of Haryana. The posts referred to the man as Abdul, a common dog whistle used on social media to refer to Muslim men.
Upon fact-checking the video, India Today discovered that the individuals involved in this tragic incident were, in fact, both Hindus. Through a keyword search, screenshots from the same video were found in multiple media reports from July 10. The Indian Express reported that a 19-year-old woman named Neha was allegedly stabbed to death by her former fiancé, Ramkumar, in Palam Vihar, Mullahera village, Gurugram. According to the police, the woman was fatally attacked at around 12 pm on July 10, leading to her immediate demise.
In a tweet, the Gurugram Police shared a video of ACP Varun Dahiya clarifying the case. ACP Dahiya stated that the accused’s name was Ramkumar, son of Surajpal. He further explained that the accused and the victim were residents of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh and were previously engaged. Allegedly, the woman’s family ended the engagement, which is believed to have fueled the accused’s resentment towards her.
India Today also interviewed ACP Dahiya, who confirmed that both the accused and the victim were Hindus and that there was no communal element to the crime.
This incident highlights the dangerous consequences of sharing misleading information without verification. In this case, the video was exploited to further a divisive narrative surrounding Love Jihad. Such misinformation not only fuels hatred and communal tensions but also maligns an entire religious community.
