Canada’s Peel Regional Police is investigating a disturbing trend of extortion targeting South Asian businesses. Victims are being contacted through various social media platforms and threatened with violence unless they pay a sum of money. The police are currently investigating nine incidents and have made one arrest, but a second suspect remains at large.
The arrest was made earlier this month when 23-year-old Tanmanjot Gill from Abbotsford, British Columbia, was apprehended for firing multiple rounds at a business in Brampton. The police are now actively searching for the second suspect, described as a South Asian male of medium build.
In response to these incidents, the Peel Regional Police has established an Extortion Investigative Task Force (EITF). This task force will consist of investigative and intelligence units supported by tactical teams, with the aim of pursuing those responsible for terrorizing the community.
Chief Nishan Duraiappah expressed concern over the safety and security of community members, stating that the police will not tolerate such actions. Terrorizing our residents will not be tolerated and Peel Regional Police will devote the resources to pursue those who are responsible, he said.
This surge in extortion targeting South Asian businesses follows recent incidents in which masked men targeted theaters playing Hindi movies in the Greater Toronto Area. Moviegoers were evacuated, and some were exposed to an unknown substance. Police reports indicate that York police are coordinating with the Peel and Toronto police to address these incidents.
The police urge anyone with information related to these extortion attempts or the incidents in theaters to come forward and assist in the investigations. The safety and security of the South Asian business community and the general public are of utmost importance, and the police are determined to bring those responsible to justice.
It is essential for the community to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activities, and cooperate with the authorities to ensure the safety of all residents. The Peel Regional Police will continue to work closely with community members and other law enforcement agencies to tackle these crimes effectively.
As investigations progress, the police will provide updates to the public. Anyone with information related to the ongoing investigations is urged to contact the Peel Regional Police or Crime Stoppers to assist in bringing an end to this disturbing trend of extortion. The community must stand together to protect the livelihoods and well-being of all its members.
