The State Election Commission (SEC) in Kolkata has suggested that the nomination period for the panchayat polls be extended by one day. In response to concerns expressed by petitioners, the SEC has proposed moving the deadline from 15 June to 16 June. CJ T S Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya took the SEC report on record and reserved their order. The CJ noted that there had been 12 Calcutta HC orders passed in the last three or four months on rallies and congregations, which drew attention to law and order. The SEC in its report has proposed a range of measures, such as imposing prohibition orders in front of nomination centres and undertaking videography of the centres and polling booths.
