Explosions and Fires Spark Urgent Call for E-Bike Battery Safety
A series of explosions and fires linked to e-bike batteries has sparked an urgent plea for better safety regulations. Cities like New York, with a high number of e-bikes on their streets, have experienced a significant increase in battery-related incidents resulting in fires and even deaths. Now, consumer advocates, fire departments, and local authorities are pushing for national safety standards and stricter regulations to address this growing concern.
In New York City alone, there have been 100 battery-related blazes this year, resulting in 13 fatalities. The concern extends beyond New York City. Nationally, there have been over 200 battery-related fires reported to the commission in the past two years, with 19 deaths linked to micromobility devices such as battery-powered scooters, bicycles, and hoverboards.
London and San Francisco have also witnessed a rise in battery-related fires. In London, lithium batteries pose the city’s fastest-growing fire risk, with approximately one fire occurring every two days. San Francisco has experienced a significant increase in battery fires this year compared to previous years.
E-bike batteries rely on the same lithium-ion chemistry as those found in cellphones, laptops, and electric vehicles. However, tighter regulations and safety standards for these devices have significantly reduced the risk of fires and accidents. Similar measures could be applied to e-bike batteries to enhance their safety.
To address the issue comprehensively, it is crucial to establish national safety standards, enforce compliance testing, and eliminate poorly manufactured batteries from the market. By ensuring that these batteries meet established safety standards, the risk of explosions and fires can be significantly reduced.
Efforts are also being made to educate e-bike users, such as delivery workers, about the importance of taking precautions while handling batteries. Disconnecting the battery once it is fully charged and avoiding leaving it on the charger for an extended period are recommended safety measures.
