Exploring the Enchanting Cueva de los Verdes in Lanzarote
Lanzarote, known as the island of thousands of colors, offers a truly remarkable experience for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. I recently had the opportunity to embark on a course called Lanzarote, the island of thousands of colors with geologist David Rabadà , which led me to the breathtaking Cueva de los Verdes. As a member of the community of readers of La Vanguardia, I am delighted to share my photographic report of this amazing trip.
The Cueva de los Verdes is a fascinating geological wonder formed by the Corona Volcano. It boasts one of the most extensive and captivating tunnel systems in the world. Along its route, you’ll discover at least 16 jameos, which are natural caves created by the collapse of the volcanic lava tube’s roof. The visual spectacle within the Cueva de los Verdes is awe-inspiring, thanks to the enchanting mix of green tones and natural colors provided by the volcanic material.
Stretching over 6 kilometers, the gallery of the Cueva de los Verdes extends from the volcano’s crater and continues underwater for 1.5 kilometers before reaching the sea. This underwater section, known as the Atlántida Tunnel, is partially accessible during the exploration of the cave. It’s an otherworldly experience to witness the seamless transition from land to underwater within this mesmerizing cave system.
Located in the MalpaÃs de la Corona, the Cueva de los Verdes finds its home within an 18 km2 area that was created by the eruption of the volcano bearing the same name. This distinctive space covers a significant portion of the northeastern end of Lanzarote, situated between the hamlet of Órsola and the small port of Arrieta. Both the MalpaÃs de La Corona and the La Corona volcano have been declared a Natural Park, recognizing their unique geological and ecological significance.
Exploring the Cueva de los Verdes is an incredible journey that unveils the island’s captivating geological heritage. As you venture into the depths of the cave, you’ll be surrounded by the mystique of ancient lava flows and the magnificence of the natural formations sculpted by time. It’s a testament to the power and beauty of nature that leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.
When preparing for your own adventure to the Cueva de Los Verdes, be sure to pack comfortable footwear and clothing suitable for exploring underground caves. Additionally, it’s advisable to join a guided tour led by knowledgeable experts who can provide valuable insights into the geological wonders you’ll encounter.
The Cueva de los Verdes stands as a testament to the extraordinary natural beauty found on the island of Lanzarote. Its unique blend of colors, textures, and awe-inspiring formations make it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a captivating adventure.
