The state of Uttar Pradesh in India has faced criticism for its reckless use of the sedition law, according to legal experts. Section 124A of the law is used to punish acts that bring or attempt to bring into hatred or contempt or excite disaffection towards the government. Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019 and the rape of a Dalit teenager in Hathras in 2020 caused a surge in sedition cases, with the UP government filing 22 in relation to the latter. Critics accuse officials of employing the laws on trivial issues as a way to please their political bosses. Over 77% of 115 sedition cases filed since 2010 in UP occurred during the last three years. More than half of these involved nationalism, including accusations of anti-India comments or of writing and chanting Pro-Pakistan slogans.
