Police officers in the US who shot dead an expat Scot following an incident outside his home were justified in their actions, an investigation has found. Gregor Fleming died after officers were called to a disturbance on a street in Hampden Township, Pennsylvania.

Police opened fire on the 44-year-old, originally from Thornliebank near Glasgow, after he moved towards them while carrying a gun on March 7. Cumberland County District Attorney Sean M. McCormack has now ruled the shooting was justified under the law and no action should be taken against the two officers involved.

His investigation found Fleming ignored several warnings to drop his weapon and deliberately pointed it at the officers. Gregor’s fiancée shared details of his struggle with depression and drinking heavily following a medical scare.

The report stated that the officers fired to protect themselves and the public. Despite efforts to save him, Fleming succumbed to his injuries. His fiancee described him as a selfless and loving person. She also expressed understanding of the officers’ actions given the circumstances.

Fleming, who was engaged to his American partner, had plans to move back to Scotland. The couple had gotten engaged the year before and shared a strong bond. Samaritans are available for support and individuals struggling can reach out for help.
