Exiled Russian Reporter Sentenced to 8 Years in Jail for Criticizing Moscow’s Ukraine Offensive
Moscow, Russia – In a latest development highlighting the ongoing crackdown on dissent in Russia, exiled Russian reporter Marina Ovsyannikova has been sentenced to eight years in jail for speaking out against Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine. Ovsyannikova, who protested live on state TV by holding up a placard reading Stop the war and They’re lying to you, was convicted in absentia for spreading what the court deemed fake news about the Russian army.
The sentencing took place on Wednesday, but Ovsyannikova, who fled the country last year with her 11-year-old daughter after escaping from house arrest, was not present.
