Russell Domingo, former Proteas head coach, has signed a three-year contract to lead the DP World Lions in South Africa, according to a statement by Lions Cricket CEO Jono Leaf-Wright. Domingo, whose tenure begins in July 2023, aims to lead the Gauteng club to trophy retention, talent discovery, securing new titles, setting new records, and fulfilling the Union’s vision of fostering personal growth on and off the field.

Domingo expressed his excitement about the appointment and his determination to contribute to the success of Lions Cricket. I am truly honoured to be part of the hugely professional and successful setup of Lions Cricket, he said. I absolutely cannot wait to get started, meet the players, Pride members, and entrench myself amongst this passionate family. I am thrilled to be back in the South African cricketing landscape and know that I’ll feel at home.

Domingo’s coaching career began in 2004 with the SA u19 team, followed by successful stints as the head coach of the Warriors franchise. He also coached the franchise in the Champions League Twenty20 tournaments of 2010 and 2011. In 2012, Domingo became South Africa’s Twenty20 International coach and, the following year, was appointed as the head coach for all formats of the Proteas. After coaching Bangladesh for three seasons, he recently took charge of the Netherlands national team before returning home to South Africa to take on the domestic cricket landscape.

Lions Cricket CEO Leaf-Wright welcomed Domingo, saying that the club is immensely proud to have him on board. Under the three-year contract, Domingo aims to continue the Lions’ dominance in the CSA One Day Cup, striving to secure the trophy for the fourth consecutive year while also expanding the DP World Lions’ silverware cabinet.

Overall, the appointment of Domingo is expected to be a major step forward for Lions Cricket and South African cricket as a whole. With his experience and passion, Domingo is ideally placed to guide the Lions to new heights and to help young players develop their talents to the fullest.
