Ex-Priest Appeals for Reinstatement After Acquittal
Rev. Kezekiah Kalule, a former Anglican priest attached to Luweero Diocese in Uganda, is seeking reinstatement after being acquitted of charges of aggravated defilement. The rev. was dropped from the church’s list of priests when he was arrested in 2018, effectively dashing his hopes of a quiet retirement. Now 68, Rev. Kalule wants the church to reconsider its decision and allow him to serve out the remaining years of his career.
During his time at Luteete and Kikyusa Archdeaconry between 2014 and 2018, Rev. Kalule was accused of engaging in unlawful sexual acts with a 16-year-old girl under his care. However, after spending over a year on remand and proving his innocence in a subsequent High Court hearing, he has been cleared of the charges.
Rev. Kalule expressed his desire to retire as a member of the clergy, stating, I was disowned by the Church because of the nature of the case. I had looked forward to a formal retirement when I reached the mandatory retirement age of 65, but this did not happen. He has since reported to the Luweero Diocesan office, where officials are considering his request for reinstatement.
In her ruling, Justice Damalie N. Lwanga found that the prosecution failed to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt. She noted inconsistencies in the victim’s statements to the police, including contradictions regarding who was responsible for her pregnancy. Rev. Kalule believes the allegations stemmed from malice by a former colleague who had been dismissed for misconduct.
The church is now faced with a decision regarding Rev. Kalule’s future. Rev. Eric Ssebigaju, Luweero Diocesan Secretary, confirmed that they have received Rev. Kalule’s file and are considering the matter.
This case highlights the challenges faced by individuals who are falsely accused and the long-lasting impact it can have on their lives and careers. Rev. Kalule hopes that the church will grant him a second chance to serve and retire with dignity. As the church weighs its decision, the importance of compassion and fairness in evaluating these cases cannot be understated.
While maintaining a balanced perspective on this matter, it’s crucial to consider all relevant information and perspectives to ensure justice is served.-
