The Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) has appealed to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to impose a ‘Green Tax’ on fuel-based two-wheelers in order to incentivize the adoption of green vehicles and promote environmental preservation and pollution reduction. The move comes in response to the Ministry of Heavy Industries’ recent decision to cut back subsidies under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) II scheme by 75%. SMEV has warned that this decision could negatively impact India’s growing EV sector and have adverse effects on the country’s environmental and health indices. SMEV’s Secretary General, Ajay Sharma, has criticized the move, citing the fact that electric vehicles are subsidized across the world in order to encourage a shift towards non-polluting energy systems. He warns that many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) may be forced to shut down due to the financial stress caused by the Ministry’s actions, as over Rs 1,200 crore worth of subsidies are currently being withheld, while further retrospective paybacks of subsidies given in 2019 have been demanded.
