Europe is at the forefront of developing innovative technology aimed at combating devastating forest fires. Last year witnessed a staggering 187,114 fires globally, and with record-breaking temperatures this year, experts predict this number will be even higher. Greece, Spain, and Canada have already witnessed the destructive impact of wildfires, with two pilots tragically losing their lives while fighting fires in Greece.

Several companies in Europe are spearheading the development of ground-based sensing systems and satellite monitoring technologies to tackle this pressing issue. Dryad Networks, Kerlink, NetOP Technology, and Sensiotech are among the key players in this field. Dryad Networks, based in Berlin, utilizes Semtech’s LoRa wireless technology to connect sensors in remote areas and detect wildfires before they can cause significant damage. With highly scalable technology, Dryad aims to save millions of hectares of forest, minimize threats to humans and animals, and prevent the emission of over a billion tonnes of CO2.

Similarly, Kerlink, in collaboration with Ditch startup NetOP Technology, has designed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based wildfire prevention system. By combining Kerlink Wirnet gateways with NetOP Technology Forest Capsules, which measure meteorological conditions like humidity, temperature, CO2 levels, and concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOC), this sub-GHz wireless system can identify high-risk areas for fires. The system’s intelligent dashboard, equipped with AI capabilities and machine-learning functions, allows officials to predict fire outbreaks accurately and track their exact GPS location.

In Brazil, Sensaiotech is leveraging AI algorithms and smart farm technology to monitor wildfires. Working alongside French tech giant Thales and Nvidia, SensaIoTech FireWatch uses predictive algorithms and sensors to identify areas with a high risk of wildfires.

Munich-based company Ororatech has developed a network of thermal sensors for monitoring forest fires on a global scale. With the ability to provide real-time situational awareness data through its Wildfire Intelligence solution, these sensors can detect fires of any size, even down to a single tree. Ororatech’s early warning system ensures timely action by alerting customers within minutes if their assets are at risk. The company operates across Canada, the USA, and Brazil.

Taking a different approach, IC Eye in Finland relies on the world’s largest satellite constellation, equipped with side aperture radar (SAR), to monitor vast forest areas for potential wildfires. With round-the-clock monitoring capabilities in any weather condition, this constellation enables fast response and efficient firefighting measures.

Moreover, Sierra Wireless, a subsidiary of Semtech, is utilizing the latest 5G module from Sony Semiconductor Israel for its Internet of Things (IoT) devices. This module supports various network configurations and has integrated radios that support IEEE 802.15.4 based protocols. With satellite connectivity and unlicensed spectrum communications capabilities, Sierra Wireless is well-equipped to provide reliable and efficient connectivity for its IoT devices.

Beyond technology for prevention, researchers from Empa and Imperial College London are developing a cutting-edge heat-resistant drone called FireDrone. The drone, equipped with an insulating jacket made of aerogel, can collect and transmit data from the scene of a fire, even in extremely hot conditions. By analyzing the source of danger at close range, firefighters can better strategize for high-risk operations before entering the danger zone.

In conclusion, European companies are playing a crucial role in harnessing technology to combat forest fires. From ground-based sensing systems to satellite monitoring technologies and advanced drones, these innovations provide early warning of wildfires, enabling more effective resource allocation and addressing the escalating impact of global warming. Through continuous efforts and the adoption of these cutting-edge solutions, Europe aims to mitigate the devastating consequences of forest fires and protect both lives and natural resources.
