EU Seeks Funding To End Gender-based Violence

The European Union (EU) has made a plea for the funding of 33 Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) in its fight against gender-based violence. The EU has already invested over N1 billion in this endeavor, recognizing that women, young girls, and boys are often the victims.

During the 9th Network Conference of SARCs, held in commemoration of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence in 2023, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Samuels Isopi, emphasized the urgent need for financial support. Isopi personally visited several SARCs and witnessed firsthand the suffering, trauma, and the hope they bring to survivors.

Isopi stated, We must all be proud of the impressive work and progress made since the launch of the first SARC in 2013. Today, there are 41 SARCs across 21 states, with over 35,500 survivors that have benefitted from their services. This demonstrates the importance of providing facilities for survivors and the added value of these centers that are at the heart of the SGBV response.

Gender-based violence remains a poignant issue affecting women, girls, and young boys, with sexual violence being the most serious crime. The EU’s investment of N1 billion is a testament to their commitment to addressing this pervasive problem.

In support of the EU’s efforts, the Minister of Women Affairs, Barr Uju Ohanenye, pledged to continue raising awareness and garnering support for the eradication of violence against women and girls. Ohanenye highlighted the significance of SARCs and their specialized medical and forensic services for victims of rape and sexual assault, emphasizing their role in providing private spaces for interviews, examinations, and counseling.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, reiterated that access to health is a fundamental human right, which in turn leads to the realization of other human rights. He acknowledged the importance of SARCs in ensuring the right to health for survivors of gender-based violence.

The EU’s call for funding and support indicates a determination to address the dire issue of gender-based violence. By establishing and strengthening SARCs, the fight against this heinous crime can gain momentum, bringing hope and healing to survivors.

As the EU seeks to secure the necessary funding for SARCs, it is crucial that individuals, organizations, and governments rally behind this cause. Only through collective action and sustained support can society eradicate gender-based violence and create a safer and more equitable world for all.
