ERCOT Successfully Avoids Power Outages Amidst High Demand
ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, has emerged from emergency operations and managed to avoid power outages despite record demand in September. Texas experienced extreme heat, leading to a new September peak demand record of 82,705 MW. ERCOT responded by bringing all available generation online, releasing remaining reserves, and implementing demand response measures to lower electric demand.
The emergency declaration was prompted by a combination of factors, including low operating reserves and a drop in frequency. High demand, coupled with lower wind and solar generation during sunset, led to a decrease in operating reserves and frequency, necessitating the initiation of emergency measures.
To secure grid stability, ERCOT used additional reserve resources available during emergency conditions and collaborated with out-of-state Independent System Operators and Market Participants to obtain more power generation capacity. The organization also obtained enforcement discretion from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, allowing generators to extend their service to meet demand and maintain grid reliability.
Despite ERCOT’s success in managing the situation, it is important for individuals to be prepared for potential power reductions or controlled outages. Local electric providers are responsible for managing such situations. It is advisable for individuals with critical medical needs to contact their local electric utility and have a backup plan in place.
To support grid stability, all government agencies, including city and county offices, have been requested to implement energy reduction programs at their facilities.
During this peak demand period, individuals can contribute to energy conservation by following simple steps such as adjusting their thermostat, reducing unnecessary lighting, and refraining from using large appliances like washers and dryers.
ERCOT’s ability to navigate this challenging situation is commendable, especially considering the unprecedented demand and strain on the grid. The organization set a new all-time peak demand record of 85,435 MW in August and has already established 10 new peak demand records this summer.
Efforts to keep the public informed include the provision of automated emergency alerts through ERCOT’s subscription service, as well as access to additional information via the official ERCOT website, social media platforms, and mobile app.
